In a nation striving to bridge the gap between power supply and demand, Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz has emerged as a transformative figure in Nigeria’s power sector. Since April 4, 2022, when he was confirmed as the Managing Director and CEO of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Abdulaziz has propelled TCN toward its mission of enhancing power transmission capacity across the country. His career journey and achievements reflect a blend of technical expertise and strategic vision—qualities that are helping shape Nigeria’s power future.
Before his official confirmation as MD/CEO, Engr. Abdulaziz served as TCN’s Acting MD/CEO from May 19, 2020. During this period, he laid the groundwork for many critical projects and initiatives, establishing a reputation for reliability and innovation. His appointment to the position was met with enthusiasm and support from key stakeholders, including the African Development Bank Group, Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC), and various state governments. This support underscored the confidence that stakeholders had in his capability to bring about meaningful change.
Under Abdulaziz’s stewardship, TCN has seen substantial progress in the completion and commissioning of major transmission projects. His commitment to infrastructure development has led to the successful energization of several critical substations, including those in Kukwaba (Abuja), Maiduguri (Borno), Odogunyan (Lagos), and Okpella (Edo). Each of these projects represents a strategic addition to Nigeria’s power grid, improving the quality and reliability of electricity supply across multiple regions. By addressing critical infrastructure gaps, Abdulaziz has laid the foundation for a more resilient and efficient national grid.
One of the most ambitious projects in the TCN pipeline is the 60-kilometer double-circuit Akwanga-Lafia 132/33kV transmission line in Nasarawa State. Abdulaziz’s assurance to stakeholders that TCN would see this project through demonstrates his commitment to expanding the nation’s transmission capacity. Once completed, this project will significantly enhance power supply to Nasarawa and surrounding areas, positively impacting communities and businesses.
Engr. Abdulaziz’s rise within Nigeria’s power sector is a testament to his dedication and expertise. Starting in 1996 as Manager of Electrical operations at the defunct National Electric Power Authority (NEPA), he steadily rose through the ranks, holding roles such as General Manager of Projects, Assistant General Manager of Technical Audit, and Assistant General Manager of Substation Projects. Each role contributed to a profound understanding of Nigeria’s power infrastructure, making him exceptionally suited for the challenges of leading TCN.
Abdulaziz’s educational background in Electronics and Automation Engineering from The Technical University in Sofia, Bulgaria, coupled with his status as a fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), has equipped him with the knowledge and credentials to lead in a technical field. His academic prowess, combined with years of hands-on experience, has allowed him to navigate the complex demands of Nigeria’s power industry effectively.
As Nigeria continues its journey toward a stable and efficient power supply, the leadership of Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz at TCN remains crucial. His vision, strategic leadership, and dedication to improving the transmission infrastructure are setting new standards in the sector, providing hope for a future where power shortages are significantly reduced. With projects underway and a commitment to operational excellence, Abdulaziz’s influence on Nigeria’s power landscape promises lasting impacts that could pave the way for a more energized, empowered Nigeria.
