NMC Advocates Enhanced Training for Mathematics and Science Teachers

Abuja, Nigeria — The Director General of the National Mathematical Centre (NMC), Prof. Promise Mebine, has called for the adequate training and retraining of Mathematics and Science teachers across all levels of the education system. Prof. Mebine made this assertion during the closing ceremony of a two-week Foundation Post Graduate Course on Research Methodology, Data Analysis, and Interpretation in Education, held on Thursday, December 5, 2024, in Abuja.

Highlighting the pivotal role of educators in shaping academic outcomes, Prof. Mebine emphasized that the quality of teachers directly impacts the quality of students produced by the education system. He described the postgraduate course as a step toward promoting mathematical research and scholarship, fostering an environment for advanced research, and enhancing the applications of Mathematics in various fields.

Speaking on the significance of the program, the Coordinator of the Mathematical Sciences Education Program (MSEP) at the Centre, Prof. Steve Oluwaniyi, expressed gratitude to the government for its support in organizing the training. He noted that the program contributes to capacity building and human resource development, ensuring the availability of critical experts in mathematical sciences. He further explained that the course enhances participants’ data analysis and computational skills, which are essential for lecturers in tertiary institutions.

The participants, drawn from Federal, State, and private tertiary institutions, commended the Centre for its efforts in equipping educators with tools to improve their teaching and research capabilities.

The event underscored the NMC’s continued commitment to strengthening education in Nigeria by developing the expertise of teachers and researchers in Mathematics and Science.
