Participants Advocate Empowerment of National Mathematical Centre for Postgraduate Education

PARTICIPANTS at a two-week RESEARCH ORIENTED COURSE IN QUANTUM MECHANICS AND ITS APPLICATIONS TO PHYSICAL PROBLEMS

Abuja, Nigeria — Participants at a two-week Research-Oriented Course in Quantum Mechanics and Its Applications to Physical Problems have called for the empowerment of the National Mathematical Centre (NMC) to run postgraduate courses in its core academic areas.

The event, organized by the Centre’s Theoretical Physics Program, concluded on Friday, December 20, 2024, with a communique jointly issued by attendees in Abuja. The participants lauded the Centre for its sustained efforts in the training and retraining of academic personnel in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions, emphasizing its role in advancing the country’s scientific and technological capacity.

In his address during the course, the Director General of the Centre, Prof. Promise Mebine, urged the government to consider amending the law establishing the Centre. He proposed renaming it the National University of Mathematical Sciences (NUMS) to enable the institution to run and award postgraduate degrees in Pure and Natural Sciences, particularly in its areas of specialization.

“The Centre has consistently championed excellence in mathematics and its applications, and this step would position it to contribute even more significantly to national development,” Prof. Mebine stated.

The Coordinator of the Theoretical Physics Program, Associate Professor Lewis Obagboye, highlighted the importance of the Research-Oriented Course (ROC). He explained that the initiative aimed to deepen participants’ knowledge of Quantum Mechanics and demonstrate how it can be applied to solve real-life problems.
