Vatican City, 21 April 2025 — The Catholic world and beyond are in mourning following the death of Pope Francis, who passed away on Easter Monday at the age of 88. The pontiff, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina, died peacefully at his residence in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta building, less than 24 hours after making an emotional appearance at St. Peter’s Square on Easter Sunday.
The announcement of his passing was made by His Eminence, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, who stated:
“Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God.”
Cardinal Farrell lauded the late Pope’s unwavering commitment to the values of the Gospel, particularly his advocacy for the poor and marginalized. “He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage, and universal love, especially in favour of the poorest and most marginalized,” he added.
A Poignant Easter Farewell
On what would be his final public appearance, Pope Francis attended Easter Mass in a wheelchair, waving to tens of thousands of faithful from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica. Though frail, the Pope blessed babies brought to him and conveyed his Easter greetings: “Dear brothers and sisters, Happy Easter.”
His traditional Easter address and blessing were delivered by an aide as he sat watching intently. In the address, the Pope emphasized the importance of peace, religious freedom, and compassion amid the world’s ongoing conflicts. He called for a ceasefire in Gaza, extended his solidarity to the people of Ukraine, and condemned the rise of global antisemitism.
“What a great thirst for death, for killing we see in the many conflicts raging in different parts of the world,” the Pope lamented.
Health Struggles and Resilience
Pope Francis’s declining health had been a growing concern. Following a severe infection leading to double pneumonia, he was hospitalized for five weeks earlier this year. Though he was discharged in March, his doctors advised two months of rest, citing two critical episodes during his hospitalization that had put his life at risk.
Despite these challenges, the Pope continued to fulfil his spiritual obligations when possible. During the jubilee year celebrations, he opened the Holy Door at St. Peter’s Basilica and prayed with children during a brief appearance at the Easter Vigil.
